When my mdr v900headphones were delivered, I eagerly placed them on my ears! At that point, my trusty old v700 cans were ancient history I knew These phones are feathery light and wonderfully comfortable.
They are on a par with the most comfortable cans on the market. They were head and shoulders above my MDR-CD1700s (and they don't look as weird) and my cushy Sennheiser hd600 They may not have the elegant leather or velvet of the MDR-CD3000s or Beyer DT880s, However that's o.k., because I can wear these bad boys for HOURS!
I tried them out with my new iRiver iFP-999 flash player and acquainted them with some tracks from Pink Floyd's"Dark Side Of The Moon". I suddenly got real amped (no pun intended)! Even with no EQ, the mdr v900 are very respectable in bass response (that “5hz” rating is the reason why) and the highs, while certainly more detailed than the V-700s, are a little forward and tend to be a little demanding.
Boy oh boy was I thrilled, no more scrambling for the volume knob, or in this case, stick. It was very impressive. I that most of the people that have praised the V-900s in user reviews, thought pretty much the way I do.
Amazingly, out of the box, they sound really spot on and sharp. I really wanted to get maximum performance from these guys, so I decided to see if the iRiver’s EQ could make a difference.
A +6db boost at 40hz brought the bass from good, to the absoulute fore front. Don't bother with much of anything below 30hz, though. I tried +3db boosts in several mid frequencies and really put those middies in a different audio galaxy.
The mdr v900 tends to be a tad more neutral than the ‘700s subtle character. However, there is greater transparency and precision than the ‘700s ever had.
I knew I had really taken these dudes to a new level, however, the highs were still too assertive. A -3db cut at 14khz took care of that issue. The highs went from good to great, so I was ready to turn up the volume on the mdr v900 headphones, which elevated their stature again from better than average to out of this world!.
At lesser volumess (with help from the EQ) the mdr v900sound fabulous, and the soundstage is wide open to infinity! The sound beats the snot out of my old 700's. I think my old portable CD player will be able to drive the mdr v900headphones.
Also, my new iRiver is able to produce 18mW @ 16ohms, so even with the volume at just a tad more than half, the ‘900s are vibrant with an infinitely wide soundstage, outstanding imaging, and awesome detail, crushing the V-700s across the entire frequency range. The ‘700s have pretty decent bass, however the ‘900s have greater control in the lows and sound infinitely more musical
